Juul's work is characterized by a focus on international current affairs and important social issues, set in a creative colorful cinematic form.
Juul Op den Kamp (1992) graduated from the Dutch National Film Academy in 2014. Three graduation films she produced (Anton, Nowhere Place, If Mama Ain't Happy) were shown at film festivals all over the world and one in particular, ‘If Mama Ain’t Happy’, has won over 40 prizes at international film festivals such as Message to Man and Slamdance. Juul won the annual producers award directly after graduation and received a Fulbright grant to obtain her master’s degree in documentary directing at Parsons University in New York. There she shot & directed two American short documentaries about immigration & nostalgia (Where Memories Live, 2016) and worked as a researcher/writer for NYT. Together with fellow female artists she founded www.girlcrewcollective.com, a platform for stories made by/for female artists. After New York she developed a collaborative inter-medial anthropology series in the Philippines on pharmaceutical industry affairs together with Chemical Youth, this resulted her first feature documentary (Sweet Medicine, 2017). Which premiered at YIDFF 2018 Japan and won the award for best feature doc. After this film she made three short docs; a VPRO documentary about academic pressure, (Onder Druk, 2018), shot again in NYC and selected for the Debut Competition at NFF 2019, a Cinekid youth doc (Het Rijk Alleen, 2020) about her nephew and (A Health Workers Mind, 2020) about the effects of trauma among healthcare workers caused by the COVID-19 crisis. The latter premiered at movies that matter in April 2021 and was selected for the Golden Calf competition at NFF. Juul’s newest feature documentary (What’s Left, 2022) about Dutch left-wing politics premiered in September 2022 and is one of the most streamed documentary on NPO start.
Aside of her independent films Juul successfully works on commercials / commissioned work with multiple agencies and brands. Some of her commisioned work prosperously traveled the world, causing evident impact for the brands and NGOs in question. Her last film for ‘Mileudefensie’ screened at the climate summit in glasgow and caused a lot of impact. For commercial work Juul joined the Pink Rabbit roster since December 2022.
